New to Swimming?

Swimming has been around since ancient times but did not become a competitive sport until the 19th Century in England.

Since its start there have been a few different strokes but the strokes swam today are Butterfly, Backstroke, Breaststroke, Freestyle.

Races range from distances from 50m all the way to 1500m, swam in either a 50m or 25m pool.

There are a range of events in the swimming programme. Typically this will be 50m, 100m and 200m races in each of the strokes. With freestyle there is also the 400m event for men and women, the 800m for women only and the 1,500 for men.

Swimming is a highly competitive individual sport that is one of the major individual events in the BUCS series.

It comprises of both individual and team races where gold, silver and bronze medals are awarded for the fastest three competitors.
